He’d not seen her in two years and now here she stood. She’d lost a lot of weight since the last time. She looked toned, athletic even. The once exceptionally long blonde and red hair dyed in streaks was now just brown. She wore a pink headband that seemed to have a set of headphones weaved through. She’d got a few tattoos recently, eclectic choices on her shoulders and neck. He spotted a poor-quality dove but a rather pretty set of dice and flowers. She had always had a kooky dress sense, but here stood in a pink and black set of running leggings and top she looked like a suburban mother. What did the Americans call them… soccer moms?

In fact, she looked rather plain.

She held a bottle of water in one hand and her phone in the other.

“Hello Terry,” she smiled warmly and broadly. Her teeth were crooked which didn’t help the slight disconcerting tilt to her smile. It seemed disingenuous somehow. Or was he just being cynical?

“…Hello Lisa,”

“Can I come in?”

“I’m on my way out actually…”

“Oh… Sorry, did I call at a bad time? I just wanted to chat that’s all…” she was so endearing. Nauseating with it. Stepford-wife material.

Or maybe Terry was just in a foul mood…?

He didn’t want her inside the flat. It felt like an intrusion. It was too personal, way too invasive.

“We could go somewhere…?” He offered hesitantly.

“Oh, that’d be lovely!” she smiled brightly.

“I’m parked just around the corner…”

So why was she dressed as if she had been jogging?

As he climbed into her car he could smell her intoxicating and overpowering floral perfume. It always seemed such an old-lady smell for someone so young. Some things never change, he thought. So it was her, she hadn’t completely lost her identity.

“Matt said you have Bridget now…” she enquired after a few pregnant moments. It was a leading sentence, for him to explain without her directly asking. A common trick to tease gossip out the neighbours. It told Terry that she had talked to Matt first and he wondered what he had said. How much did Lisa know of her ex-husband’s crumbling second marriage?

More importantly why was she back on the scene? Had Matt got in touch with her? Or was there another reason why she’d crawled out the woodworks? She’d been gone for a long while, that alone warranted suspicion.

He left the silence that fell between them. Let her feel uncomfortable while he steeled himself. Why was he doing this? Why had he gone along with the universe’s cruel hat-trick?

It wasn’t until they were in the nearest café and looking at the breakfast menu that Lisa couldn’t tolerate the silence a moment longer.

“I’m sorry about you and Matt. I thought you was good together…” she affixed a sympathetic look upon him.

“Me too…” Terry answered darkly.

The waitress came and collected their order. A black tea for Terry and a pretentious sounding mocca-latte something for Lisa.

“So erm… How is Bridget? Y’know… with everything…” she enquired gently.

“She’s ok.” Terry answered firmly, “Well… she’s coping.
